Rep. Nancy Pelosi may be planning to retire at last: report
The former Democratic Speaker of the House, 85, is known for being a hardline leftist, and has served in office for decades

Reports are circulating that Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will not seek reelection in 2026, after serving in public office for almost four decades, including two past terms as the first female Speaker of the House.
According to NBC, Democratic officials and aides in both California and Washington, D.C., have told the outlet that they believe Pelosi will choose not to run for reelection.
Pelosi has represented San Francisco for 37 years. She has also been a staunch opponent of the Trump administration. Many Americans may recall when Pelosi, while serving as House Speaker, ripped up President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech as he closed his remarks in 2020.
This news comes amid anticipation of California’s election on Tuesday, where voters will decide on whether to pass Proposition 50 – a Democrat-backed bid to redraw Congressional district maps in response to Texas’ redistricting.
The measure, if passed, could eliminate up to five Republican-held congressional seats by essentially adding more Democrat voters to traditionally Republican districts.
Pelosi is a strong supporter of Prop 50. “With #YesOnProp50, we’ll draw the line right here in California — and hold Washington Republicans accountable to working families,” she wrote on X in October.
While Pelosi has not confirmed or denied reports about a possible retirement, she is facing at least one serious primary challenger: California State Sen. Scott Wiener (D).
According to Politico, Wiener originally said that he would not run for Pelosi’s seat unless she retired, lending credence to the possibility that bowing out of the political arena is, indeed, in her future.
Wiener, like Pelosi, is also a San Francisco lawmaker. He is also a large supporter of the LGBTQ movement and has advocated for leftist policies like decriminalizing sex work and certain psychedelic drugs, per the San Francisco Chronicle.
