ChatGPT bias shows, labeling President Trump as a ‘threat to democracy’: watchdog report
A watchdog report from Media Research Center Free Speech America says that ChatGPT allegedly showed a truly surprising – and obvious – bias when it comes to President Donald Trump and its view of history.

Popular AI model ChatGPT reportedly labeled President Donald Trump as one of the gravest threats to democracy, ranking him right alongside dictators like Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a report from watchdog group Media Research Center/Free Speech America.
ChatGPT, whose parent company is OpenAI, responded to MRC’s findings with a statement, noting that the bias “shouldn’t happen and is not how the model is trained to behave.”
Nevertheless, MRC researchers reportedly found that ChatGPT gave Trump a rating of nine on a scale of one to 10 in terms of “how much of a threat Trump poses.”
“I don’t give [him] a 10/10 because the United States still has substantial institutional checks—courts, states, Congress, civil society, independent media, and elections—and those checks have successfully constrained Trump at important moments,” MRC quoted the AI chatbot.
MRC said that only Nazi leader Adolph Hitler received a “10” rating from ChatGPT.
Notably, the research center found that other AI models like Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok, and Meta AI did not provide such polarizing answers about Trump, but instead “delivered a more balanced approach in their explanations of the American president.”
ChatGPT’s reasoning for labeling Trump a high-level threat to democracy, according to MRC’s analysis, seems to have been largely based on the Capitol protests of January 6, 2021.
“It is absurd to say that filing civil litigation in U.S. courts is the same as murdering 6 million Jews,” said MRC Free Speech America VP Dan Schneider in a statement, responding to the AI model’s comparison of Trump to notorious figures like Hitler.
In a follow-up report, MRC noted that the AI chatbot later changed its answer when asked about “how great a threat” President Trump was to democracy, lessening its harsh rhetoric, but nevertheless labeling him as a “serious and unusually significant threat to democratic norms and institutions.”
MRC President David Bozell fired off in a statement, “OpenAI is coughing up the same tired anti-Trump garbage the old media have been peddling for years. Spare us the ‘golly, how did that happen?’ routine. New technology, same old bias. At some point, it is not an accident. It is the programming. Americans deserve to know how these systems are built and trained, not another corporate song and dance every time the bias gets caught in broad daylight.”
