President Trump gives update on the future of the Kennedy Center

The Board of Trustees for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts voted on Tuesday to immediately shut down the main facility, citing urgent structural concerns and ongoing fiscal distress.

President Donald Trump confirmed the decision on Truth Social, stating that the closure allows the complex to initiate a major reconstruction process. The president announced that while the building will close immediately, actual renovation and reconstruction work will remain on hold until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issues a definitive ruling on the board’s approved naming and memorial designations.

The board’s action followed a ruling earlier in the day by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who blocked an August board resolution intended to recognize the president’s role in revitalizing the center. That resolution proposed an inscription noting the building had been renovated and restored by President Trump, while designating the surrounding grounds as the President Donald J. Trump Plaza. Judge Cooper ruled that the administration cannot install memorials or rename sections of the congressionally chartered institution without statutory approval from lawmakers.

Kennedy Center leadership identified severe infrastructure neglect stemming from past management, alongside acute budget shortfalls, as the primary catalysts for the shutdown. The board noted that private capital and philanthropic commitments secured through the Trump Kennedy Center Fund remain central to the facility’s long-term survival and scheduled upgrades.

Trump noted that $17 million in raised funds has already been deposited to sustain basic operations during the transition. The Department of Justice intends to seek an expedited appeal before the D.C. Circuit to resolve the dispute, determine naming authority, and clear the path for the complex’s revitalization.
