Texas opens America’s first child detransition clinic in the nation thanks to Ken Paxton

Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston has opened the nation’s first medical clinic dedicated specifically to detransition care for minors and young adults, fulfilling the terms of a legal settlement with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The opening stems from a May 2026 healthcare fraud settlement reached between the Office of the Attorney General and the hospital system. Paxton launched a state investigation into Texas Children’s Hospital following whistleblower disclosures by pediatric nurse Vanessa Sivadge, which revealed that physicians at the hospital were billing the state Medicaid program for pediatric gender-transition procedures in violation of Texas state law.

Under the finalized settlement agreement, Texas Children’s Hospital paid $10 million to the state, terminated all pediatric gender-transition treatments, dismissed the personnel involved in the improper billing, and committed to establishing and funding a specialized clinic for patients seeking to halt or reverse medical gender transitions. The Houston facility is now operational and accepting patient appointments for medical and psychological detransition care.
