On Monday, the U.S. Congress will return to Capitol Hill after a fall recess, following on the heels of a tough midterm election loss for the Republican Party – and one outgoing Republican congressman has his sights set on Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth before the fall recess, and he has already made it clear that he intends to reintroduce them as soon as Congress reconvenes next week.
“There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns,” Massie said on Wednesday.
In September, Massie filed articles of impeachment alleging that the secretary had engaged in “unconstitutional and illegal actions” amid the war with Iran. He also accused the secretary of acting illegally in the context of the strike against Venezuela earlier this year, the continued strikes against drug traffickers in the SOUTHCOM area – and several other accusations.
The Republican-led House recessed before any further legislative action could be taken on the resolution.
Now, with the U.S. Congress set to reconvene before Democrats take control of both chambers in January, Massie hasn’t flinched from his threat.
This week, Secretary Hegseth directly addressed the impeachment attempts in a long video outlining the department’s many wins under his leadership: the elimination of DEI in the U.S. military, the recognition of biological reality in the rank-and-file, the rejection of climate ideology in the Armed Forces, an embrace of proud patriotism and grounded faith in God.
“We tore down their sacred cows one by one and without apology,” he said of the left.
As for Massie’s impeachment articles, Hegseth noted, “This is not about me, but of course the other side, in case you’ve noticed, they’re obsessed. A disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly. Just like they tried against President Trump twice.”
He said this was “all about the politics of personal destruction.”
Hegseth continued, “[It] didn’t work against President Trump, and it won’t work with me.”
