Atlantic sees first category 5 storm of the season as Erin strengthens

Hurricane Erin has intensified into a powerful Category 5 storm, packing sustained winds of 160 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It is currently located about 105 miles northeast of Anguilla and is advancing westward through the southwestern Atlantic.
This historic intensification marks the first major hurricane of the Atlantic season, and its rapid strengthening stands out even for August. Outer bands are already bringing heavy rain and dangerous seas to the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Turks and Caicos.
While the storm’s current track keeps its center offshore, swells and life threatening rip currents are expected to spread across the Bahamas, Bermuda, and parts of the U.S. East Coast early next week.
Emergency measures are already unfolding across the Caribbean. Forecasters warn of flooding, landslides, and mudslides, with storm watches issued for islands like St. Martin, St. Barts, and Anguilla. Preparations include inspecting shelters and deploying FEMA personnel in Puerto Rico.
