An active shooter incident has been reported at Fort Stewart, the U.S. Army’s largest installation east of the Mississippi River. The situation unfolded in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, leading officials to place portions of the base under lockdown. Fort Stewart also houses Wright and Evans Army Airfields and several on‑post schools.
Lt. Col. Angel Tomko confirmed that an active shooter was present and that casualties occurred, though officials have not yet clarified whether they involve injuries or fatalities. Emergency responders transported four people to a local hospital. Authorities said they have identified a suspect connected to the incident.
Base personnel were ordered to shelter in place, secure doors and windows, and remain in contact with leadership. All gates to Fort Stewart were closed as security forces and law enforcement responded.
The lockdown extended to three elementary schools on the installation. Officials stressed that the schools were not targeted and that students remained safe. Military and law enforcement agencies continue to investigate and are expected to provide further updates.
