Who will the Democratic nominee be for Minnesota governor?

With Governor Tim Walz declining to seek a third term, Minnesota Democrats are quietly maneuvering to determine who will carry the DFL banner into the 2026 gubernatorial race. While no formal announcements have been made, several names are already emerging as likely contenders.
At the top of the list is U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar. Regarded as one of the state’s strongest statewide vote getters, Klobuchar brings what the Democrats see as deep name recognition, a reputation for political durability, and the ability to quickly consolidate party support.
Her entry would likely deter a crowded primary and signal that Democrats intend to hold the governor’s office with a familiar and steady figure.Attorney General Keith Ellison is another frequently mentioned possibility. Ellison has strong backing among progressive activists and labor groups, though his polarizing profile could invite a more contested primary and sharpen ideological divides within the party.
Secretary of State Steve Simon has also surfaced as a quieter but credible option, positioning himself as an institutional reformer with appeal to moderates and election focused voters.
Within the Legislature, Senate Majority Leader Nick Frentz could attempt to translate his budget credentials into a statewide run, though he would face a steep climb in building name recognition. U.S. Representative Kelly Morrison has also been floated as a potential candidate.
