Details finally released on former Senate candidate’s ambassador position

President Donald Trump has formally nominated Kentucky businessman and former U.S. Senate candidate Nate Morris to serve as the next United States ambassador to Colombia.
The nomination was included in a large batch of more than three dozen selections submitted to the Senate for approval on Monday. If confirmed, Morris will take over one of the most critical diplomatic posts for Washington in Latin America.
The announcement concludes weeks of speculation regarding Morris, who unexpectedly dropped out of the Republican primary race to succeed retiring Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell on May 1. At the time, Trump publicly requested that Morris exit the primary to clear the path for Representative Andy Barr, promising Morris a high-level ambassadorship in exchange.
In a social media post following his exit, Trump praised Morris as Oxford-educated and tough, stating he would represent the country well overseas. Barr subsequently won the Republican primary on May 19.
Morris is a Lexington-based entrepreneur who founded the waste and recycling company Rubicon and serves as the chairman and chief executive officer of Morris Industries.
Although he has never held elected political office, he maintained strong financial backing during his brief Senate run. A political action committee supporting him received a 10 million dollar donation from tech billionaire Elon Musk. Morris also utilized connections with other key administration figures, launching his Senate campaign on Donald Trump Jr.’s podcast and referencing his alliance with Vice President JD Vance.
