Fake news regarding Ice: A danger to Federal operations

Claims circulating online this week that Immigration and Customs Enforcement deliberately detained a 5 year old child have been rejected by the Department of Homeland Security, which says the story has been widely mischaracterized and stripped of critical context.
According to DHS, ICE agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation focused on an adult when the incident occurred. The agency says the child was not a target of the operation. DHS stated that the child’s father attempted to flee from agents, leaving the child behind. An officer remained with the child to ensure his safety while other agents apprehended the adult.
DHS emphasized that ICE does not target children for arrest and that federal policy prioritizes child welfare during enforcement actions. The agency also noted that when adults are taken into custody, parents are typically given options regarding the care and placement of their children, including remaining together when appropriate.
The department addressed the situation publicly after viral posts claimed ICE “abducted” a child, language DHS called false and inflammatory. Such misinformation has real world consequences, given the rise in threats and assaults against federal agents following misleading narratives online. DHS said agents have faced harassment and violence fueled by inaccurate reporting and social media claims.
Federal officials urged the public and media outlets to rely on verified information and official statements rather than viral posts, warning that distorted accounts not only undermine public trust but place lives at risk.
