After clearing a key hurdle in the U.S. Senate on Saturday night, President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” will face marathon voting in the chamber before it can be punted back to the House for a final vote.
The Senate will engage in what is sometimes called a “vote-a-rama,” allowing senators to introduce as many amendments as they want in succession, with corresponding votes for approval.
This voting process is expected to take place on Monday. The Republican-controlled Senate will need to pass the OBBB and send it back to the House for approval before it can head to President Trump’s desk to be signed by the GOP-imposed deadline of July 4.
On Saturday, the bill passed in a 51-49 procedural vote, allowing the legislation to continue to a final debate, with just two Republicans holdouts: Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Thom Tillis (N.C.).
“As President of the USA, I am proud of them all, and look forward to working with them to GROW OUR ECONOMY, REDUCE WASTEFUL SPENDING, SECURE OUR BORDER, FIGHT FOR OUR MILITARY/VETS, ENSURE THAT OUR MEDICAID SYSTEM HELPS THOSE WHO TRULY NEED IT, PROTECT OUR SECOND AMENDMENT, AND SO MUCH MORE,” President Trump wrote on Saturday night.
Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., told Fox News on Monday morning that a final passage of the OBBB was “fulfilling our promise of growth and prosperity for the American people.”
He noted the legislation would provide “more money in people’s pockets for gas, groceries, rent…”
Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, also argued in the Senate Monday morning, stating that if the OBBB did not pass, it would result in a $1,700 tax hike on every average American family of four. He also said it would halve the existing child tax credit.
Crapo additionally warned of skyrocketing tax burdens on “20 million small businesses” and a reduction in the standard tax deduction allowed now, thanks to the pre-existing Trump Tax Cuts.
If passed, the OBBB will make the Trump Tax Cuts permanent, as well as provide funding for border security and border wall construction. It will additionally end taxes on tips and overtime for many hardworking Americans.
