How this Utah ranch became one of the most studied paranormal hotspots in the world
The X-Report- A weekly “non-human” interest story column | By Easton Martin | July 15, 2025
Strange objects in the sky, disappearing items, cattle mutilations, and UAPs. What do all of these have in common? For one Utah family, they were just everyday life.
In 1994, a man named Terry Sherman and his family purchased a large ranch in a remote part of Utah. Terry, a rancher by trade, was well versed in raising cattle, especially prized Black Angus. The ranch, now referred to as “Skinwalker Ranch,” has become the epicenter for unexplained and seemingly paranormal phenomena.
Soon after the Shermans moved in, they began to experience a range of bizarre occurrences that defied rational explanation. In one high-profile encounter early on, Terry spotted what appeared to be a large wolf from a distance. As it came closer, it was clear this was far larger than any wolf he had ever seen.
The beast approached a cattle pen and clamped its jaws around a young calf whose head was sticking out of the bars. Terry, not one to let his cattle go easily, fired on the animal with his rifle. After multiple shots, the creature seemed unfazed. What would have certainly killed a normal wolf had little to no effect. It finally released the calf and began to walk away. Terry grabbed a higher caliber weapon, a .30-06, and fired again.
A large chunk of flesh tore off the beast, yet it still appeared unbothered. Terry and his son chased the animal off the property, following its tracks until they simply vanished in the middle of a muddy patch.
Other phenomena at the ranch
In the following months, the strange activity only increased. The family began to report missing items, kitchen utensils, farm equipment, and more. At that point, it became nearly impossible for them to deny that they were dealing with something far beyond their comprehension.
Terry also reported seeing what appeared to be large unidentified crafts in the sky above the ranch, bright orange in color, with what he described as something like a portal to another sky within it.
Perhaps what Skinwalker Ranch is best known for is cattle mutilations. In one instance, Terry found a cow whose entrails had been completely removed, yet there was no blood or evidence of a struggle. Over the course of a few years, he would lose a significant amount of livestock from his herd.
Amid all these incidents, the Shermans tried to maintain normalcy, but it became too much. Eventually, they went public with their story, setting off a chain of events that would bring government contractors, billionaire aerospace moguls, and even Pentagon insiders to the ranch’s doorstep.
What makes Skinwalker Ranch unique is just how many different kinds of phenomena have been observed there over the years. Reports of disembodied voices, eerie apparitions, shape-shifting entities, and UFOs have become standard fare for this bizarre piece of land in rural Utah.
Much of the testimony to these strange encounters has been recorded in the book Hunt for the Skinwalker: Science Confronts the Unexplained at a Remote Ranch in Utah, by Colm Kelleher and George Knapp.
Kelleher and Knapp document experiences on the ranch after the Shermans left, during the ownership of aerospace investor Robert Bigelow and his team at NIDS, the National Institute for Discovery Science. Bigelow’s purchase of the ranch in 1997 led to years of investigation which were shrouded in secrecy, apart from the documentation of Kelleher and Knapp.
In 2016, the ranch was purchased by real estate investor Brandon Fugal. Fugal has put together his own team of investigators to continue study on the ranch, documented in the History Channel TV show “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch”.
To this day, Skinwalker Ranch remains one of the most mysterious and heavily studied paranormal hotspots in the world. What began as one family’s nightmare has evolved into a multi-decade investigation drawing in scientists, intelligence agencies, and curious observers alike.
Whether it is a thin place between dimensions, a testing ground for advanced technology, or something even stranger, the questions raised by the Shermans’ experience continue to haunt the desert soil of northeastern Utah.
