Hurricane Erin approaches east coast
News | By Easton Martin | August 20,2025
Hurricane Erin is stirring off the Atlantic and creating hazardous conditions along much of the East Coast. While the storm is projected to stay offshore, its size and strength are generating dangerous surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding from the Carolinas to New England.
In North Carolina’s Outer Banks, sections of Highway 12 are already experiencing overwash, and local officials have issued evacuation orders for some vulnerable areas. Virginia Beach and Ocean City, Maryland, have closed stretches of shoreline as high waves and strong currents make swimming unsafe. Farther north, states like New Jersey and New York are bracing for coastal flooding during high tide cycles, with beach closures already in place.
Authorities emphasize that even without landfall, Erin’s effects will be widespread. Residents and visitors are urged to stay out of the water, avoid low-lying roads, and closely follow local warnings as the storm continues its path offshore.
