U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced this week that ICE has arrested the infamous “Maryland Man” Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whom the DHS has described as an alleged “known MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, wife beater, and child predator.”
“President Trump is not going to allow this illegal alien, who is an MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator to terrorize American citizens any longer,” Noem said in a statement.
Garcia’s story has been a hot topic in the media. The League of United Latin American Citizens even assembled a petition to pressure Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and United States President Donald Trump to allow Garcia to return to the U.S. after being deported to an El Salvadoran prison.
Garcia apparently returned to the U.S. in June to face charges related to human smuggling. He was ordered by the court to return to Maryland, according to Fox News. He was arrested at the Baltimore agency check-in on Monday, the outlet said.
Garcia will now be processed for removal to Uganda.
According to the DHS, Garcia has previously admitted to “being illegally present in the United States,” and, according to Prince George’s County Police Gang Unit 2019 records, he was allegedly “validated” as a member of MS-13.
In yet another incident in 2022, he was stopped by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and, based on the circumstances of the traffic stop, the encountering officer suspected Garcia was engaging in human trafficking.
Finally, Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez, petitioned for a protective order against him, alleging that he had physically abused her.
In the Oval Office on Monday, Trump addressed the arrest of Garcia after a reporter asked why Democrats were so attached to this man.
“Because they think he’s going to be good for votes,” Trump said. “And I think he’s very bad for votes. These people are deranged.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi added, “We’ve got him under control. He will no longer terrorize our country. He’s currently charged with human smuggling, including children. The guy needs to be in prison, he doesn’t need to be on the streets like all these liberals want him to be.”
