Israel launches strike on Syrian targets

On Tuesday, Israel launched a rare and high-profile airstrike deep into Syrian territory, targeting key military sites in the capital city of Damascus. The strike hit the Syrian Defense Ministry building and a major military headquarters near the presidential palace. According to Syrian state media and local sources, the strike resulted in at least three deaths and more than thirty injuries, including both military personnel and civilians.
The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the operation, stating it was a direct response to recent actions by the Syrian military that endangered Israel’s Druze community in the Golan Heights and across the border in southern Syria. Tensions have escalated in recent weeks, particularly in the Druze-majority province of As-Suwayda, where violent clashes have erupted between local Druze fighters and forces loyal to the Assad regime.
This marks one of the most direct strikes by Israel on Syria’s central military infrastructure in recent years. While Israel has frequently conducted airstrikes on Iranian targets and proxy forces operating in Syria, such as Hezbollah, direct attacks on Damascus itself remain rare and signify a notable escalation.
Syrian officials condemned the strike as a violation of sovereignty, while Israel has emphasized its intent to protect civilians and prevent hostile actors from establishing a foothold near its borders. The international community has yet to issue formal responses, though analysts warn the situation could inflame an already volatile regional landscape.
