James Talarico’s attempt to “own” Elon Musk exposes his own hypocrisy
By Easton Martin
Texas Democrat James Talarico is drawing attention to billionaire influence in American politics after criticizing Elon Musk, even as his own Senate campaign benefits from a massive financial contribution to a pro-Talarico super PAC.
“There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator,” Talarico wrote on X, responding to a post from Musk.
The exchange offered Talarico an opportunity to attack the influence of wealthy individuals in politics, but the financial backing behind his own campaign raises an obvious question about the consistency of that message.
unsurprisingly, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman gave $10 million to a super PAC backing Talarico’s Senate bid. The reported contribution accounted for nearly 80 percent of the group’s second-quarter fundraising haul, making it a substantial source of financial support for the Democrat’s campaign. Talarico’s concern about money in politics is predictably hypocritical.
