Macrons file suit against Candace owens over gender claims

French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron have filed a defamation lawsuit against American commentator Candace Owens in Delaware Superior Court.
The suit alleges Owens falsely claimed that Brigitte Macron was born male under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux, and that she promoted conspiracy theories involving identity theft, incest, and government mind control to drive traffic to her show and merchandise.
The Macrons’ legal team, Clare Locke LLP, stated that Owens ignored three formal requests to retract the statements, beginning in December 2024 and most recently on July 1, 2025.
The complaint details emotional and reputational harm caused by what it describes as a campaign of public humiliation. The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages and calls for a jury trial.
Owens has responded by framing the case as an attack on free speech, promising to address the allegations further on her program.
