Mitch McConnell is alive, much to the surprise of many
By Easton Martin
Senator Mitch McConnell returned to the United States Senate on Monday to cast his first vote since June. The Senator appeared to be in poor health amid speculations that he had already passed away.
The Kentucky Republican arrived at the Capitol to advance the nomination of Matthew R. Byrne to a federal district court in Ohio. McConnell addressed reporters outside the chamber and stated his readiness to resume legislative work.
McConnell experienced a fall at his home in mid-June. A medical evaluation revealed a mild case of pneumonia and he subsequently entered a rehabilitation facility. In a public statement on Monday, McConnell attributed his prolonged recovery process to the physical impacts of childhood polio. He assured Senate Majority Leader John Thune that he will prioritize being present for crucial floor votes while continuing physical therapy.
The 84-year-old senator plans to focus on passing the upcoming farm bill and managing defense appropriations. McConnell is completing his final term in office and will retire in January. Representative Andy Barr is the Republican nominee running to succeed McConnell in the November election.
