Shawn Ryan’s demon issue: A helpful clarification

Podcaster Shawn Ryan has stated publicly that he has faced severe, persistent spiritual warfare in his personal life. He has described sudden waves of dread, physical and psychological torment, and localized disturbances that conventional explanations fail to account for.

For those unfamiliar with biblical categories, these reports are baffling. Within the Christian tradition, however, accounts like Ryan’s bring to light an ongoing pastoral and doctrinal question: what language accurately defines this kind of severe demonic assault?

In Western Christianity, the default category for intense supernatural conflict is usually “demonic possession.” That term is linguistically inaccurate and somewhat theologically misleading. Scripture nowhere presents believers or people seeking God as the owned property of the devil. A rigorous look at the Greek text of the New Testament, along with biblical scholarship, shows that the condition is far better translated and understood as “demonization.”

The English word “possession” implies legal ownership or absolute mastery. When applied to a Christian, this language creates an immediate contradiction with scripture. An evil spirit cannot own or hold legal title to what Christ has redeemed.

The New Testament authors never used the standard Greek verbs for ownership or property acquisition, such as ktenomai or katecho, to describe a person under demonic attack. Instead, they consistently used the passive verb daimonizomai. Daimonizomai means “to be demonized,” “to be acted upon by a demon,” or “to be subjected to demonic influence.”

 Scripture does speak of demonic spirits being able to gain a “foothold” (Eph. 4:26), translated from the Greek term “topos”, meaning an inhabited space. The most likely interpretation seems to indicate that demonic spirits are able to inhabit individuals, though not “possess” in the the sense of ownership. 

The New Testament presents demonic assault not as an all-or-nothing binary, but as a spectrum of severity. In the Gospels, people described by daimonizomai suffered varying degrees of physical affliction, psychological agitation, and behavioral disruption. None of these accounts assert that the person’s soul was Satan’s property. The King James translators rendered daimonizomai with the phrase “possessed with a devil,” importing a post-biblical, legal concept of ownership into the English text that the original Greek does not support.

New Testament scholar Clinton Arnold addresses this error directly in his work on early Christian views of the unseen world, including 3 Crucial Questions About Spiritual Warfare. Arnold observes that the word “possession” carries heavy cultural assumptions that obscure the biblical data. He demonstrates that scripture depicts demonic spirits exercising varying degrees of external and internal influence, torment, and physical harassment without owning the human soul or occupying the ultimate core of a person. Arnold argues that adopting “demonization” directly from the Greek restores the proper biblical category. It removes the false presumption that a person must be entirely mastered by evil before spiritual warfare and deliverance are relevant.

Dr. Sam Storms makes the same case from a pastoral and systematic perspective in his book Understanding Spiritual Warfare. Storms points out that much of the debate over whether a Christian can have a demon stems entirely from the English word “possession.” If one asks whether a demon can own a Christian, the answer is no. If one asks whether a demon can afflict, oppress, or exercise localized influence over a believer’s mind, emotions, or physical body, the biblical and pastoral answer is yes. Storms explains that demonic influence operates on a continuum of degree. A person can endure acute demonic conflict in specific areas of life while their soul remains secured by God.

This distinction directly clarifies what Shawn Ryan has described. A person who turns toward biblical truth and speaks into the public sphere regularly encounters acute spiritual resistance. Ryan’s accounts of night terrors, sudden mental distress, and tangible spiritual antagonism seem to reflect targeted demonic harassment.

Calling this “possession” creates unnecessary confusion and despair. It leads an individual to believe they are owned by the devil, spiritually abandoned, or beyond redemption. Describing the problem as demonization preserves biblical accuracy. It identifies the demonic attack as real and dangerous, while affirming that the enemy has no claim of ownership over the person. Most importantly, it keeps the focus where the New Testament places it: on the superior authority of Jesus Christ to liberate anyone under demonic assault.
