The “Good guy with a gun” is real: Oregon school shooting proves that yet again
By Easton Martin
An armed community member intervened during a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, killing the 16-year-old gunman before police could reach him inside the building.
The shooting occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School, where the attacker killed three children and one teacher while critically injuring another child and a second teacher. The armed citizen confronted the shooter after witnessing him enter the school and pursued him inside, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz.
The intervention brought the attack to an end within minutes of the initial emergency calls. Police received the first report at approximately 12:59 p.m. and arrived at the school around three minutes later. Officers then confirmed that the suspect had been fatally shot by the community member.
The incident demonstrates how an armed civilian can intervene during an active shooting when law enforcement has not yet reached the threat. Although the intervention could not prevent every death or injury, it stopped the gunman before he could continue his attack.
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the individual for intervening and acknowledged the emotional burden associated with confronting a mass shooter. She thanked the community member for acting to prevent further loss of life.
Police identified the shooter as a 16-year-old resident of Bend but had not publicly released his name or established a motive as of Friday morning. Investigators also had not determined whether he attended Silver Rail Elementary or had any personal connection to the school.
Authorities reported that the shooter forced his way into the building by firing at locked doors. Preliminary reports identified a pump-action shotgun as the weapon used in the attack.
The three children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11. The injured child was 7 years old, while the wounded teacher was 54. Both remained critically injured following the shooting, according to initial reports.
The tragedy has renewed attention to the importance of stopping an attacker as quickly as possible during a school shooting. Police officers arrived within minutes, but the armed community member confronted the gunman before officers could engage him.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the shooter’s motive and reconstruct the events inside the school. The armed individual’s identity has not yet been publicly disclosed.
