The Trump administration is working with Kerr County, Texas, in the aftermath of a devastating flash flood near the Guadalupe River that claimed the lives of dozens of people.
“I just signed a Major Disaster Declaration for Kerr County, Texas, to ensure that our Brave First Responders immediately have the resources they need,” President Trump wrote in a statement on Sunday.
According to CBS, flash flooding on July 4 swept through the region unexpectedly, and has claimed the lives of more than 80 people, including 27 campers – some of whom were children – at or near an all-girls summer camp called “Camp Mystic.”
President Trump said his administration is working closely with state and local leaders as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
“Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem was on the ground yesterday with Governor Greg Abbott, who is working hard to help the people of his Great State. Our incredible U.S. Coast Guard, together with State First Responders, have saved more than 850 lives,” Trump said.
Of the deceased, at least 27 were campers or counselors at Camp Mystic, per CBS.
The camp organization released a statement addressing the horrific tragedy on their website:
“Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly.”
Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott thanked President Trump for his administration’s support.
He wrote on X, “Collaboration between our state, local, and federal partners is critical to our state’s recovery. Thank you to our brave first responders working around the clock to find missing Texans.
As of Monday morning, the governor said the Texas Department of Public Safety was still working around the clock in rescue and recovery efforts. “We will not stop until every missing person is found,” he said.
According to Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R), 10 girls and one camp counselor from Camp Mystic are still missing, as of early Monday morning.
