President Donald Trump on Monday signed executive orders aimed at getting crime under control in the United States, focusing not only on the ongoing crackdown in Washington, D.C., but also on those who desecrate the American flag.
“Washington was the most dangerous place in this country, and now, you know what, it’s probably the safest place,” Trump said during a special EO signing ceremony in the Oval Office.
Trump was joined by key members of his cabinet, like Attorney General Pam Bondi, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The president’s federal takeover of the nation’s capital has been a critical topic in the media, but the statistics don’t lie: since Trump decided to utilize federal assets to clean up the city streets of D.C., crime has fallen.
According to the D.C. Police Union, robbery has dropped 42 percent, carjacking has dropped 85 percent, and violent crime has plummeted 25 percent over the past 14 days of federal control.
“In the last 11 days, we’ve had no murders – and that’s the first time that’s taken place in years,” Trump said.
On Monday, Trump signed the following orders:
- Measures to end cashless bail and enforce the law. This EO is focused on enforcing policies “that all necessary and lawful measures be taken to end cashless bail policies and ensure the pretrial detention of any criminal suspect who threatens public safety.” This was a two-part order; one dealt directly with taking steps to end cashless bail in the U.S., and the second EO was aimed at ending cashless bail in D.C., and enforcing law in that specific district,
- Additional measures to address the “crime emergency” in Washington, D.C. These additional actions include hiring more members of the U.S. Park Police to assist in federal operations and maintain public safety, establishing an online portal for Americans to apply to join the “D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force,” and ensuring State National Guard and Air National Guard forces are trained and available to assist in federal, state and local enforcement operations quelling civil disturbances,
- Directing the Department of Justice to prosecute those who burn or desecrate the American flag: “The Attorney General shall prioritize the enforcement to the fullest extent possible of our Nation’s criminal and civil laws against acts of American Flag desecration that violate applicable, content-neutral laws, while causing harm unrelated to expression, consistent with the First Amendment.” The president said the penalty for this crime would be “one year in jail.” He commented, “You will see flag burning stopping immediately.”
The president told reporters that since ordering a federal crackdown in D.C., law enforcement has removed 439 criminal illegal aliens from the city, along with six known gang leaders. His administration also located and rescued two previously missing children and reunited them with their families, he said.
Trump further noted that 49 homeless encampments have been removed from D.C.
