President Donald Trump on Friday weighed in on the news from abroad indicating that France will soon recognize a “State of Palestine” in a handful of weeks.
“Look, he’s a different kind of a guy,” Trump said, referring to French President Emmanuel Macron. “…What he says doesn’t matter. It’s not going to change anything.”
The president told reporters that Macron’s statement “doesn’t carry any weight,” but reiterated that he had no malice against the French president, noting that he was a “team player.”
This comes just one day after Macron announced that his country would recognize the “State of Palestine” to support “a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”
“I will make this solemn announcement before the United Nations General Assembly this coming September. The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and to bring relief to the civilian population,” Macron said in a statement.
In the French president’s statement, he called for an “immediate ceasefire” between Hamas and Israel, and additionally noted his desire for the “demilitarization of Hamas” and the rebuilding of Gaza.
Since taking office in January, President Trump and his team have consistently worked on brokering a ceasefire and peace deal in the Middle East, but Hamas terrorists have made it difficult.
“They pulled out of Gaza – they pulled out in terms of negotiating,” Trump told reporters on Friday. “It was too bad. Hamas didn’t really want to make a deal. I think they want to die, and it’s very, very bad. And it got to be to a point where, you’re going to have to finish the job.”
The president also said Hamas was down to holding a slim number of hostages. “When you get down to those last 20 hostages,” Trump said, “…it’s going to be very hard for Hamas to make a deal because they lose their shield, they lose their cover.”
He noted how many hostages his administration has managed to get out – both living and deceased.
