United Airlines glitch causes widespread delays for the airline

United Airlines grounded flights nationwide on Wednesday due to a widespread technical issue affecting its internal systems.
The disruption began in the early evening and impacted hundreds of departures across major hubs including Chicago, Denver, Houston, and San Francisco.
The problem was traced to a malfunction in the airline’s weight and balance system, which is essential for calculating safe flight operations. The outage led to a temporary pause in mainline departures and created significant delays across the network.
By late Wednesday night, the issue had been resolved and flights began to resume. However, the disruption caused over 1,000 delays and more than 200 cancellations. Some residual delays continued into Thursday as operations returned to normal.
United confirmed the problem was not related to cybersecurity. The airline is working to address the backlog and minimize further impact on passengers.
