U.S. announces Venezuela blockade: Here is what it will look like

The United States has announced what President Donald Trump described as a total and complete blockade targeting U.S.-sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, marking a sharp escalation in pressure on the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
According to U.S. officials, the action is aimed specifically at vessels already under American sanctions, rather than a full maritime quarantine of the country. The objective is to further restrict Venezuela’s ability to export oil, which remains the regime’s primary source of revenue, and to limit access to international shipping networks that facilitate sanctioned trade.
The administration says the blockade will be enforced through expanded naval monitoring in the Caribbean and cooperation with regional partners. Several oil tankers have reportedly altered course or delayed travel in response to the announcement, reflecting concerns over potential seizure or penalties.
According to the White House, the move is necessary to counter what it describes as Venezuela’s involvement in drug trafficking, organized crime, and regional destabilization, while also pressuring Maduro to change course politically.
