SpaceX and xAI visionary Elon Musk, American inventor Palmer Luckey, and former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will soon take the helm of a brand-new project with a distinct battlefield focus: Project Meridian.
The project, commissioned by the Department of War, was unveiled on Wednesday by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
“Today, at my direction, I’m announcing Project Meridian, an effort led by America’s best minds to study the future of warfare,” he said. “Under the leadership of the department’s chief technology officer, Emil Michael, Project Meridian will be co-led by three of our nation’s best minds: Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich.”
The announcement was one of six major initiatives unveiled during the secretary’s visit to Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Musk is one of the world’s foremost leaders in technology and innovation. He is the CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI. He also owns X (formerly Twitter).
Palmer Luckey is the inventor of Oculus VR and Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets. He also founded Anduril Industries and Mod Retro.
Newt Gingrich does not bring technological know-how, but he does bring many years of policymaking and strategizing to the table. Gingrich is also a student of history and has written many books focused on military fiction and non-fiction.
On that note, a memo published by the DOW this week stressed the importance of studying new methods of fighting.
“We are witnessing rapid advances in artificial intelligence, autonomy, directed energy, robotics, biotechnology, among other critical high-tech areas,” the memo, written by Hegseth, stated. “Combined, these new domains, new ways of fighting, and technological developments will profoundly alter the character of warfare. To maintain global dominance, the United States must anticipate future operational environments and act decisively to develop the tools to dominate in them.”
According to Hegseth, Project Meridian will study the battlefields of the future and identify which tech and weapons America’s warfighters will need to use and master well into the 21st century.
“Project Meridian’s primary function will be to map the trajectory of future warfare, identify critical capability gaps, and propose actionable solutions in furtherance of the identified goals in the 2026 National Security Science and Technology Strategy,” he noted.
The commission has been tasked with delivering findings and recommendations no later than January 28, 2027.
