Why the US withdrew bombers from RAF Fairford
By Easton Martin
The United States Air Force ordered the immediate withdrawal of its B-1 strategic bombers from RAF Fairford following concrete security threats and a major counterterrorism operation near the British airfield.
The redeployment unfolded rapidly over the weekend after British counterterrorism officers arrested five men on suspicion of terrorism and explosive offenses close to the Gloucestershire base. Authorities indicated that the suspects planned an attack aimed directly at the facility. Intelligence assessments linked the threat to an Iranian-backed plot, potentially involving weaponized drones designed to damage aircraft parked in the open on the tarmac.
Military officials ordered the bombers back to domestic bases without delay. The departure occurred with notable urgency, forcing some flight crews to take off while aerial refueling tankers scrambled in midair to support the transatlantic transit.
President Donald Trump confirmed the withdrawal, stating that specific and credible threats prompted the decision to relocate the fleet rather than expose the aircraft to enemy targeting. Trump stated that Washington knows the actors behind the threat and affirmed a connection to Iranian interests.
