Severe flash flood event pounds Ruidoso, New Mexico
News | By Easton Martin | July 8, 2025
Ruidoso, New Mexico, is under a flash flood emergency today after intense monsoon rains triggered catastrophic flooding across the mountain village. The storm poured over 2 inches of rain in under an hour, overwhelming terrain still recovering from last year’s South Fork and Salt wildfires.
The flash floods come just days after Texas experienced a fatal flash flood event along the Guadalupe river.
The National Weather Service reported that the Rio Ruidoso surged from normal levels to over 18 feet in just 30 minutes, causing extensive flooding and sweeping away entire structures. One dramatic video showed a house being carried downstream by the current. Fortunately, no fatalities have been confirmed, though multiple injuries are being assessed.
At least 85 swift-water rescues have been carried out by emergency responders and the New Mexico National Guard. Floodwaters submerged roadways and overtook neighborhoods in Upper Canyon, Brady Canyon, Cedar Creek, and other areas near the river.
Emergency shelters have been established at the Ruidoso Community Center, Eastern New Mexico University’s local campus, and the Angus Church of the Nazarene to accommodate displaced residents. Officials have urged the public to avoid flooded roads and to evacuate to higher ground immediately if in danger.
Experts say the area’s wildfire burn scars have left the soil unable to absorb water, significantly increasing the risk of flash floods. With more rain in the forecast, officials remain on high alert.
