Trump floats the idea of rebates for taxpayers
President Donald Trump said his administration was considering rebates for American taxpayers in the wake of record-breaking tariff revenue

On Friday, President Donald Trump suggested the idea of issuing rebates to American taxpayers in the wake of record-breaking tariff revenue pouring into the U.S. under his trade policies.
“We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate – but the big thing we want to do is pay down debt,” Trump said to reporters just outside the White House. “…We have so much money coming in from tariffs that a little rebate for people of a certain income level might be very nice.”
His comment comes amid a historic $113 billion customs-duties haul in 2025 for the U.S., as President Trump has imposed tariffs on major economies worldwide, Fox Business reported.
The president’s comments on a potential rebate for “people of a certain income level” also come just one day after he visited the Federal Reserve and pressured Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to lower interest rates for the sake of Americans who want to buy homes.
“I think we had a very good meeting,” Trump said, speaking about Powell. “…He said to me, very strongly, ‘The country is doing well…’ I got that to mean that I think he’s going to start recommending lower rates.”
On Thursday, Trump told the press that lowering the interest rates in America by just three points could save the U.S. up to $1 trillion every year. “As good as we’re doing,” Trump remarked, “we’d do better if we had lower interest rates.”
He described such a move as a “final little notch” to supercharging an already-booming American economy.
The last time tax “rebates” or “stimulus payments” were made to Americans was during the 2020 Covid pandemic and continued into 2021. Three rounds of these payments were disbursed to American tax filers as a form of “Economic Impact Payments.”
