The White House has directed the Smithsonian Institution to conduct a broad internal review of its museums, focusing on exhibits, educational materials, and upcoming programming ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
A letter sent Tuesday to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III outlined the scope of the review, which will examine exhibit text, online content, curatorial processes, and plans for future displays. Eight museums are the initial focus, including the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
The Smithsonian has 30 days to provide materials for review and 120 days to implement any required changes. Administration officials say the effort aims to ensure presentations reflect shared American values, while critics argue it risks politicizing historical interpretation. The Smithsonian has stated it will cooperate while maintaining its commitment to accuracy and inclusivity.
