The U.S. war with Iran has been the focal point of most political discussions over the past year, but as the midterm elections draw near, the conflict has faded – at least temporarily – into the background.
On Friday, Admiral Brad Cooper, the Commander of the U.S. Central Command, released a video statement on the status of the war, projecting confidence that the IRGC and the Iranian Navy have been severely degraded.
Cooper said that, earlier this week, he visited some of the “more than 50,000” U.S. servicemembers operating across the Middle East, including the mission in the Strait of Hormuz.
“When I flew over the strait, I saw dozens of commercial vessels transiting – cargo, crude oil, liquid natural gas or LNG, and I also saw our US assets in the air and on the water, including a squadron of advanced sea drones that were on patrol supporting a defensive layer,” Cooper stated.
He said he “didn’t see” any signs of the IRGC or hostile Iranian naval activity.
He continued, “They patrolled the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters for decades, harassing, and threatening and seizing commercial vessels at will, but they were not out there because Iran’s navy is all at the bottom of the sea.”
Cooper confirmed that the U.S. Navy had successfully cleared the strait’s internationally recognized primary transit routes of Iranian sea mines.
“This week, we reached a significant milestone, having now assisted Gulf partners in exporting more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil since summer,” the admiral announced.
He said the U.S. has prevented Iran from exporting any oil, due to the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports. Cooper praised U.S. forces for bravely carrying out these operations.
“Since day one, America’s sons and daughters serving in the Middle East have shown relentless commitment, dedication, and courage,” he continued. “It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve alongside them and recognize them for the tremendous accomplishments on behalf of the nation.”
It is unclear if or when strikes against Iran could resume. President Donald Trump stated in early October that he would not order attacks against Iran until after the U.S. midterm elections.
“We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said in a statement at the time. “I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition, both Economically and Militarily, and while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, with Oil flowing in Record Numbers of Barrels through the Hormuz Strait (22 Million Barrels, last night alone, with not one barrel coming from, or going to, Iran!), we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd.”
