The U.S. Central Command announced Friday that a historically unprecedented number of aircraft carriers are currently operating in the Middle East amid Operation Epic Fury, drawing speculation about the likelihood of a permanent peace with Iran.
Three aircraft carriers, the USS Gerald R. Ford, the USS George H.W. Bush, and the USS Abraham Lincoln, are currently deployed in the region, along with their carrier wings.
According to CENTCOM, these fleets include more than 200 aircraft and 15,000 Sailors and Marines.
This update comes amid the U.S. Naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – a blockade that President Donald Trump has ordered to remain in place amid ceasefire negotiations with Iran.
U.S. forces have so far redirected 34 vessels in the Strait, per CENTCOM.
The president has additionally ordered the U.S. Navy to “shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be (Their naval ships are ALL, 159 of them, at the bottom of the sea!), that is putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz.”
On Friday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth affirmed during a briefing at the Pentagon that the U.S. military is carrying out those orders with precision.
There is currently no timeline for a ceasefire agreement with Iran. According to the administration, this seems to be due to a lack of internal cohesion within the ranks of the Iranian regime leadership.
President Trump remarked on Truth Social on Thursday, “Iran is having a very hard time figuring out who their leader is! They just don’t know! The infighting is between the ‘Hardliners,’ who have been losing BADLY on the battlefield, and the ‘Moderates,’ who are not very moderate at all (but gaining respect!), is CRAZY!”
The war with Iran has been costly. Global oil prices have chaotically ebbed and spiked amid the wartime violence and unpredictable negotiations. The flow of energy and fertilizer in the Strait of Hormuz has been essentially choked out for over 50 days.
Additionally, 400 U.S. servicemembers have reportedly been injured in this war, and at least 13 have lost their lives.
