U.S. forces successfully intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles charting a course toward Americans in Kuwait this week, seemingly heightening tensions in the Middle East.
According to the U.S. Central Command, the missiles were intercepted at 11 p.m. ET Sunday night.
“These missiles were immediately defeated and no American personnel were harmed,” CENTCOM said in a statement. “U.S. Central Command remains vigilant and will continue to protect our forces from Iranian aggression while supporting the ongoing ceasefire.”
This also comes amid increasing aggression between Israel and Lebanon, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered military strikes against Beirut this week.
“In response to the repeated and ongoing violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon by the terrorist organization Hezbollah and the attacks against our cities and citizens, I have instructed the IDF, together with Defense Minister Israel Katz, to strike terrorist targets in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut,” Netanyahu stated on X.
Over the weekend, CENTCOM additionally said that it conducted “self-defense strikes on Iranian radar and command and control sites for drones” in Iran in Goruk and on Qeshm Island. The move was a response to “aggressive Iranian actions that included the shootdown of a U.S. MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters. U.S. fighter aircraft swiftly responded by eliminating Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed clear threats to ships transiting regional waters.”
As Iran and the U.S. trade attacks amid what seems to be a barely-there ceasefire, negotiations are ongoing. According to President Donald Trump, Iran is interested in sealing a deal with the U.S.
“Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good one for the U.S.A. and those that are with us,” the president said in a statement posted Sunday night.
He continued, “But don’t the Dumocrats, and various seemingly unpatriotic Republicans, understand that it is MUCH tougher for me to properly do my job and negotiate, when political hacks keep negatively ‘chirping,’ at levels never seen before, over and over again, that I should move faster, or move slower, or go to war, or not go to war, or whatever. Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end – It always does!”
