Corruption in the Talarico campaign? Why this evidence cannot be ignored

Democratic nominee James Talarico is confronting corruption allegations in the Texas U.S. Senate race following revelations that he collected substantial personal income from an education consulting firm that received millions of dollars in state contracts while he exercised direct committee oversight.

Talarico, who has centered his campaign against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton on allegations of political misconduct, now faces scrutiny over his long-running private employment with MAYA Consulting, an Austin-based firm that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and recently rebranded as VIDA Collaborative.

State records and ethics filings show Talarico earned tens of thousands of dollars from the private firm between 2019 and 2025, including $83,333 in 2025. Throughout that exact duration, Talarico served as a voting member of the Texas House Public Education Committee, an influential legislative body that oversees funding and policy for the Texas Education Agency.

Texas Education Agency transaction logs confirm the state agency awarded MAYA Consulting multi-million dollar contracts during Talarico’s tenure on the committee, including agreements worth $3.57 million and $1.63 million in 2021 and 2022. The state funded the firm to conduct education programming while Talarico remained on the payroll of both the Texas Legislature and the consulting firm itself.

Ken Paxton called on Talarico to provide immediate answers to Texas taxpayers. Paxton stated that Talarico abused his position in Austin to personally benefit from state education spending, directing public dollars into an entity that paid him far more than his official legislative compensation.
