A Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing concerning the 2027 FBI budget shifted into a sharp personal confrontation on Tuesday between Director Kash Patel and Senator Chris Van Hollen. The proceedings, which were intended to focus on federal spending, were instead marked by a series of allegations regarding personal conduct and the use of public funds.
Senator Van Hollen (D-Md.) initiated the conflict by questioning the director about his professional history. The senator referenced a report suggesting that Patel had a record of excessive drinking and unexplained absences that had caused concern among his colleagues. During the exchange, Van Hollen also reminded the director of the legal consequences of providing false information to Congress.
Patel denied the allegations and responded with a series of counterclaims. He said that the senator had been seen consuming margaritas in El Salvador on the taxpayer dollar while in the company of a convicted criminal. The director further stated that Van Hollen was the only person in the room who had a history of drinking during the workday at the public expense.
The dispute continued as Patel raised a specific financial matter regarding a bar tab at a Washington, D.C., hotel. Patel claimed the senator had incurred a $7,000 bill at the lobby desk. While other reports indicated the expense was actually a $712 campaign charge, the director insisted that the senator’s conduct was documented on video and represented a significant double standard.
