A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake has struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The quake, recorded at a depth of about 19 kilometers, sent tsunami waves across the Pacific Ocean and prompted widespread warnings.
In the United States, authorities issued advisories for Hawaii, Alaska, and the West Coast. Hawaii experienced waves of around four feet, leading to evacuations along low-lying shorelines.
California and parts of the Pacific Northwest also reported waves of about half a meter, causing temporary flooding in some harbors. Emergency officials urged residents to stay away from beaches and coastal areas until all warnings were lifted.
The National Weather Service confirmed that waves reached as far as Washington State, while Alaskan communities along the Aleutian chain carried out precautionary evacuations. Flights were briefly delayed at Honolulu’s airport, though normal operations have since resumed.
No fatalities have been reported in the United States, but emergency agencies continue to monitor aftershocks and advise caution as residents return to coastal areas.
