Election news: Voters in Chester County PA encounter difficulties when trying to vote
By Easton Martin | November 4, 2025
Voting in Chester County descended into confusion Tuesday after widespread reports of missing poll books and provisional ballot shortages at multiple precincts. The technical issues, which prevented voters, particularly independents and third-party registrants, from being properly processed, led a judge to extend voting hours across the county until 10 p.m.
According to local officials and reports from 6ABC, electronic poll books failed to load correctly at the start of Election Day, forcing poll workers to rely on paper backups. However, some precincts either lacked complete voter lists or ran out of provisional ballots entirely, leaving some residents temporarily unable to cast their votes.
Political activist Scott Presler, who has been on the ground in Pennsylvania, called the situation an “Election Day disaster,” sharing statements from voters who said they were turned away or told that their names weren’t in the voter rolls. One message he posted showed a voter claiming his independent wife was unable to vote because the polling site had no provisional ballots left.
In another post, Presler said Chester County’s GOP chairman reported that many polling locations were “still without poll books” and “running low on provisional ballots” by midday. Later in the evening, Presler celebrated the judge’s decision to extend voting hours, urging Republicans to “use every bit of those two extra hours.”
County officials have acknowledged the technical malfunction and said they are investigating the root cause, emphasizing that every eligible voter will be allowed to cast a ballot and that all votes will be counted.
The Pennsylvania Department of State confirmed that affected counties have been authorized to take emergency measures to ensure voter access, while observers from both parties continue to monitor the situation.
With polls now open later than usual, election workers are preparing for a long night ahead as Chester County works to restore confidence after one of the most turbulent Election Days in recent memory.
