Former Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly lost her Secret Service protection, following a standard six-month period after leaving the White House in January.
According to a report from Fox News, a spokesperson for Harris stated that she will lose her Secret Service protection, despite an executive memorandum from former President Joe Biden that provided her with a year of security – six months longer than the average for a former vice president.
Despite mainstream headlines, six months of Secret Service protection post-term for former vice presidents is standard.
This news also comes as Harris is preparing to go on a 15-city book tour to promote her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, which recounts her short-lived presidential campaign against President Donald Trump.
“For the first time, and with surprising and revealing insights, Kamala Harris tells the story of one of the wildest and most consequential presidential campaigns in American history,” the book website states.
According to Fox, Harris’s Secret Service protection will end on September 1. The first stop on her book tour will be in New York, New York, on September 24. The tour includes events in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom.
The tour will conclude in Miami, Florida, in late November.
Harris will have to provide her own private security for her tour, rather than relying on taxpayer-funded protection.
According to the Secret Service website, protection for sitting presidents and vice presidents is mandatory. “All other individuals entitled to our protection may decline security if they choose,” the site explains.
The Secret Service also protects former presidents, their spouses, and children under the age of 16.
Current Secret Service Director Sean M. Curran was appointed by President Donald Trump in January 2025. Before taking charge of the protective agency, Curran led President Trump’s personal security detail and was famously one of the agents who helped shield the president on stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, during an assassination attempt in 2024 at a campaign rally.
