President Trump says Israel is on board with Hamas disarmament deal

President Donald Trump addressed the newly announced disarmament deal with Hamas, telling reporters during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David that Israel had agreed to cooperate with the Board of Peace.
“We do have an understanding with Israel,” President Trump said. “Israel’s very happy about it…they’ve been very good about it.”
He delivered a bit of a caveat on the deal, noting, “Now, will it go through its ups and downs? It’s a very complex situation over there; the people are very complex, and difficult, in many cases wonderful, in many cases not so wonderful.”
The president said that the deal was “a big step for the Middle East and people are really impressed by it.”
The president announced the deal on Thursday in a statement.
“Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza,” he said. “This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY.”
President Trump noted that the agreement was a “critical step” toward Gaza being governed by a new Palestinian government. The goal here, based on the statement, seems to be finding a balance between Palestinians’ desire for their own state versus Israel’s desire to wage retributive war.
“The agreement will be carried out in carefully structured phases,” the president said on Thursday. “As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors.”
The details of this deal have remained somewhat ambiguous. However, senior Hamas official Dr. Basem Naim noted on X, “Yes, the #Hamas movement has agreed to the roadmap in its latest version, following a fierce negotiation battle waged with the patience and steadfastness of our people, and the blood and remains of our sons and leaders.”
This new agreement, according to President Trump, is the next “major milestone” in the implementation of the Trump 20-point peace plan for the Middle East.
