News | By Easton Martin | August 21, 2025
The Texas House advanced a dynamic new congressional map through an 88 to 52 vote along clear partisan lines, marking a strategic and proactive move by state lawmakers to reflect evolving voter patterns and safeguard Texas’ influence in Congress. Spearheaded by Republican architects including Rep.
Todd Hunter, the plan reconfigures key districts in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and South Texas, generating up to five additional winnable seats for the GOP as the 2026 midterm elections draw near.
Supporters emphasize that four of the newly drawn districts maintain a Hispanic majority, underscoring the Legislature’s commitment to preserving and even enhancing minority majority representation.
Governor Abbott has praised the effort, applauding House Republicans for delivering a map that better reflects the actual votes of Texans, while standing firm in advancing legislative priorities despite political disruptions.
The new map now transitions to the Texas Senate and is expected to reach Governor Abbott’s desk shortly. Lawmakers and GOP advocates hail this redistricting as a bold, forward looking measure that ensures Texas representation aligns with its shifting political and demographic landscape.
