President Donald Trump on Friday wished American moms a happy Mother’s Day while hosting Gold Star mothers and Angel Moms at the White House Rose Garden.
“I want to thank every single mother here this afternoon and all across our nation for your work every single day,” he said during remarks. “America’s moms are raising, really raising the future of our country.”
The event at the Rose Garden was sunny and beautiful. Many moms gathered at tables on the freshly renovated patio area, complete with yellow-and-white striped Mar-a-Lago-style umbrellas.
“You have the most important job there is in America or anyplace else, and you’re doing an incredible job. I just want to wish you all very Happy Mother’s Day,” the president said.
President Trump recognized the Gold Star mothers (mothers of fallen soldiers) and Angel Moms (mothers of individuals slain by illegal aliens), praising them as “strong and truly heroic.”
“Sunday will be filled with love and gratitude and joy,” he said. “…Today we’re honored to be joined by many strong and truly heroic moms who have stood up for their children both in life and in a very profound loss.”
First Lady Melania Trump also honored mothers this weekend in a thoughtful op-ed she penned for The Washington Post, writing, “A mother’s devotion to her child is unmatched. This love takes many forms: strength, compassion, wisdom, grace, joy, labor, humor and even grief, to name a few. The love between mother and child has helped shape America’s identity since the nation’s founding 250 years ago.”
She continued, “It is time to revisit the enduring American family traditions that have supported generations, while also recognizing the challenges for mothers of building both a career and a home. This balancing act reflects the realities women face today.”
The American celebration of Mother’s Day can historically be traced to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, a lobbyist who worked hard during the turn of the century and beyond to create a day to honor the sacrifices women make as mothers.
The first Mother’s Day proclamation was made in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson, according to the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum.
