Representative Anna Paulina Luna announced this week that the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets will convene a formal hearing to examine the Central Intelligence Agency’s controversial MK Ultra program.
Luna, who chairs the task force, indicated that the upcoming session will focus on unearthing previously sealed or redacted records related to the mid-20th century experiments.
The move follows a series of high-profile inquiries led by the Florida Republican, including recent hearings on unidentified aerial phenomena and the declassified records of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luna noted that the primary objective of these investigations is to restore public trust in federal institutions by providing maximum transparency regarding historical government activities.
MK Ultra was a top-secret CIA project initiated in the early 1950s that explored various methods of mind control and behavioral modification. The program became infamous for its use of chemical agents, psychological stress, and sensory deprivation on both willing and unwitting subjects. Although many records were destroyed in the 1970s, the task force aims to review surviving documentation and interview experts to provide a clearer picture of the program’s scope and impact.
In her announcement, Luna emphasized that the American people deserve the truth about pivotal events in the nation’s history. She stated that the government has a responsibility to be honest about its past actions so that the public can move past speculation and conspiracy theories. The task force expects to examine how current classification standards may be preventing the release of information that no longer poses a risk to national security.
