Trump asks Congress for extension on Federal oversight of DC
News | By Easton Martin | August 13, 2025
President Trump has asked congressional Republicans to extend federal oversight of the Washington, D.C., police department beyond the current 30-day period. The request follows his earlier order deploying 800 National Guard troops to the city and placing local police under federal authority.
The move was made under provisions allowing the president to assume temporary control of law enforcement in the District of Columbia. Trump’s extension request would require congressional approval to remain in effect past the original deadline.
If approved, the measure would continue federal management of the department while the National Guard remains in place. No date has been set for a congressional vote on the proposal.
