Trump meets with Canadian PM and world leaders at G7 Summit in Kananaskis
President Donald Trump visited Canada on Monday at the anticipated G7 Summit, meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in beautiful Kananaskis, and answering questions from the press on trade and foreign affairs.
“We’ve developed a very good relationship and we’re going to be talking about trade and many other things,” the president told the media.
The president said the primary focus of talks with Canada would be trade and said he expected to “accomplish a lot.”
Monday’s G7 Summit was marked by inarguably gorgeous views in Kananaskis, near Calgary, where world leaders met amid a backdrop of lovely mountains and forests.
On the heels of months of back-and-forth negotiations on trade and tariffs with Canada, President Trump discussed whether he planned on coming to an agreement with the neighboring country on commerce.
“We’re going to see if we can get to the bottom of it,” Trump said. “I’m a tariff person…it’s simple, it’s easy, it’s precise, and it just goes very quickly.”
The president noted that PM Carney had a different approach to trade, which he described as a “more complex idea but also very good, so we’re going to look at both.”
He also said that a trade deal was “achievable” if both parties agreed on the terms.
The Canadian prime minister visited the White House in early May, where he participated in a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump. Over the past several months, the 47th president has facetiously and, sometimes, seriously suggested that Canada become the 51st state.
The prime minister said last month that Canada was “not for sale,” but Trump responded to that statement with a small smile.
He remarked, “I say, never say never….Canada loves us, and we love Canada. That’s, I think, the number one thing that’s important. But we’ll see, I mean, over time. We’ll see what happens.”
