President Donald Trump netted another win late Thursday night when the House of Representatives voted to pass a rescissions bill that aims to cut government waste significantly.
“HOUSE APPROVES NINE BILLION DOLLAR CUTS PACKAGE, INCLUDING ATROCIOUS NPR AND PUBLIC BROADCASTING, WHERE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR WERE WASTED,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He added, “REPUBLICANS HAVE TRIED DOING THIS FOR 40 YEARS, AND FAILED….BUT NO MORE. THIS IS BIG!!”
The rescissions package comes just two weeks after the “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed Congress and was signed into law by Trump on July 4.
The rescissions package will claw back billions of dollars of funding at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, USAID, and the State Department – expenses Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson described this week as “unnecessary and wasteful spending.”
Last week, the president threatened to pull support from Republicans who opposed the bill, per LindellTV. “It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together,” he said.
Upon the passage of the rescissions bill Thursday night, Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., wrote, “Don’t let Congress take any victory laps though. This needs to be the first of many. Keep pressing for deeper cuts to waste, fraud, and abuse across the board.”
Republicans had been facing a July 18 deadline to pass the bill, and risked missing that deadline this week. According to CBS, the House joined the bill’s final vote with a procedural vote, which allowed the legislation to move quickly, passing narrowly in a vote of 216-213.
“President Trump and House Republicans promised fiscal responsibility and government efficiency. Today, we’re once again delivering on that promise,” said Speaker Johnson on X
