As the United States pushes a wave of technological revolution with the rapid development of artificial intelligence and large AI data centers, Americans are rightly concerned about how this will affect their cost of living.
If left unaddressed, the massive boom in national AI infrastructure build-out could significantly spike electricity prices for everyday Americans. A new report from Bloomberg (BloombergNEF) estimated that AI data centers will leech from about 20 percent of the national power grid by 2035, for example.
This massive electricity demand is almost guaranteed to raise electricity prices for Americans nationwide.
President Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge (RPP), which was expanded this week, is aimed at ensuring that data center operators fund the electricity generation and infrastructure of their own projects, rather than passing that cost down to the consumer (the ratepayers).
According to the White House, the pledge has accrued more than 200 organizations “across every stakeholder in the U.S. power system.”
These 200 organizations represent about 80 percent of the power delivered to the American people, which immediately provides ratepayer protection, for now, for about 263 million citizens.
Here are the five commitments that companies have made when they sign on to President Trump’s pledge:
- Build, bring, or buy new power supply,
- Pay for new power delivery infrastructure,
- Pay whether they use the power or not,
- Invest in local jobs and workforce development,
- Contribute to grid and community resilience.
23 governors have signed onto the RPP, along with seven of the largest U.S. hyperscalers and AI companies. A comprehensive list of each company that has signed on is available on the White House website.
During a special event on Thursday heralding the RPP’s expansion, President Trump touted the program as a key part of safeguarding power prices for Americans.
“We’re here today to continue the incredible progress we’re making in communities nationwide to ensure that as new data centers go up… electricity bills for American families will actually come down,” he remarked. “…With the Trump administration’s Ratepayer Protection Plan, the American innovators and consumers strive to win together because we’re insisting that AI data centers and big tech companies pay their own way.”
