In a shocking display of disunity, 58 House Democrats on Friday voted against a resolution honoring the life of the late Charlie Kirk.
The resolution passed 310-58, regardless of Democrats’ posturing.
Kirk, 31, was assassinated at Utah Valley University last week while speaking to college students. His death has shaken the nation, but it has also served as a unifying event: vigils and memorial services honoring Kirk’s life have spread nationwide.
The measure (H. Res. 719) is ceremonial, and it aims to honor the “life and legacy of Charles ‘Charlie’ James Kirk.”
The resolution describes Kirk as a “courageous American patriot, whose life was tragically and unjustly cut short in an act of political violence.”
Further:
“Whereas Charlie Kirk personified the values of the First Amendment, exercising his God-given right to speak freely, challenge prevailing narratives, and did so with honor, courage, and respect for his fellow Americans;
Whereas Charlie Kirk’s commitment to civil discussion and debate stood as a model for young Americans across the political spectrum, and he worked tirelessly to promote unity without compromising on conviction…”
While speaking about the resolution on the House floor, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said, “The last week has been difficult because people are shaken by this in a way that we’ve not seen the country move in quite some time. I’ve described it as if a shadow has been passed across the country.”
Johnson added, “In the midst of all this, the thing that encourages me is that I believe in the same promises of Scripture that Charlie did. And I’ve been reminded a lot of the passage of Scripture that says the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it…The best way to honor the work and the legacy and the ministry of Charlie Kirk is to do what he did – that is to advance the principles that he advanced, to adopt his approach.”
