House Cancels Thursday Votes: The typical congressional move

House Republican leadership abruptly altered the legislative calendar on Wednesday, canceling scheduled Thursday votes and sending lawmakers out of Washington nearly two months early for district work ahead of the fall midterms.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer announced the change in a memo to members, confirming that legislative business concluded Wednesday afternoon. Leadership accelerated floor action on regulatory measures, including a resolution targeting Environmental Protection Agency rules, to clear the docket before adjournment. The early departure means the House will not reconvene for floor votes until November 9.

Speaker Mike Johnson stated that the schedule change occurred because the chamber had completed its slate of priority business, arguing that members need to return home to hear directly from constituents.

The maneuver also prevents floor consideration of a privileged resolution introduced by Representative Thomas Massie to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Johnson dismissed the resolution as an unnecessary distraction during ongoing foreign policy challenges.
