An update on Trump’s China trip

President Trump landed in Beijing yesterday to start a high profile state visit aimed at stabilizing relations between the United States and China. He was met at the airport by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and a military honor guard. The presidential delegation consists of family members Eric and Lara Trump as well as a group of high level officials and business titans including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Elon Musk, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Before his arrival, the president signaled his intent to push for greater access to Chinese markets for American companies and to discuss a major weapons deal for Taiwan.
The core of the diplomatic mission occurred on May 14 during a two hour summit at the Great Hall of the People. President Trump praised President Xi Jinping as a great leader and a friend, expressing optimism that the bond between their nations would continue to improve. However, the atmosphere included moments of tension as Xi provided a firm warning about Taiwan.
He described the territory as a primary red line that must not be crossed and suggested that further friction could result in conflict. The two leaders also discussed the conflict in Iran, agreeing that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to protect global energy supplies and economic growth.
Economic and technological issues dominated the remaining discussions on Thursday. Negotiators looked at potential Chinese commitments to buy American soybeans, beef, and Boeing aircraft while proposing a new Board of Trade to handle future commercial disagreements. The leaders also explored the possibility of cooperation on artificial intelligence.
