Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pledges end to politically motivated audits

As acting IRS director, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reaffirmed his commitment to restoring fairness in tax enforcement, pledging to eliminate political bias within the agency. Bessent emphasized that his top priorities are revenue collection, privacy protection, and customer service, which he described as the key pillars in his strategy to revitalize IRS operations.
He specifically addressed Republican concerns over a Biden era policy known as Revenue Ruling 2014-14. That guidance created confusion by treating routine business transactions as suspect unless taxpayers made specific basis adjustments. Bessent advocated revising the policy to restore clarity and fairness for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
A coalition of twenty House Ways and Means Committee members had urged the IRS to reconsider the ruling, noting its chilling effect on ordinary commercial activity. Bessent assured lawmakers that under his leadership, enforcement actions will remain grounded in law, fairness, and consistency.
His direction also responds to calls from Republican senators to reverse politically motivated audits and enforcement practices that targeted conservative groups. The unified leadership structure Bessent now brings to both the Treasury and IRS reinforces a singular, transparent vision of ending politicization while maintaining strong collections and robust taxpayer rights.
